Vijayawada: The long-pending road connectivity issues surrounding AIIMS Mangalagiri are finally set to be resolved, with the state govt sanctioning nearly Rs 10 crore for the development of roads and related infrastructure works in the area. The decision is expected to provide major relief to patients, attendants and medical staff travelling to the premier medical institution, which has been facing accessibility problems since its establishment.
Poor road conditions and a lack of proper connectivity had become a major inconvenience, particularly during emergencies and peak traffic hours. According to official sources, the sanctioned funds will be utilised for widening and strengthening key internal and approach roads leading to the campus. The Roads and buildings department will go for the construction of a four-lane road to AIIMS from the existing NH. Authorities are also planning to improve drainage systems and roadside infrastructure to ensure smooth vehicular movement throughout the year.
The upgraded connectivity is expected to significantly reduce travel time for patients coming from Guntur, Vijayawada and neighbouring districts. Sources said that the forest department has agreed to transfer about 1.5 acres of land to the state govt for taking up the road.
The R&B department will pay compensation to the tune of Rs 75 lakh to the forest department. The R&B has also decided to take up central lighting and a divider on the proposed new road to AIIMS. The state govt reportedly decided to make repeated representations from residents, public representatives and hospital authorities highlighting the difficulties being faced by thousands of visitors every day. With patient footfall increasing steadily at AIIMS, demand for better infrastructure around the campus has intensified in recent months. Sources said road development works are likely to commence shortly after completion of the tendering process. Engineering officials have already conducted preliminary inspections and prepared estimates for the execution of the project on a priority basis.
Apart from improving patient access, the road expansion is also expected to boost development activity in the surrounding areas. Residents believe the improved connectivity will enhance land value and encourage commercial establishments near the AIIMS zone. Meanwhile, officials stated that efforts are also underway to strengthen public transport facilities to the institution. Additional bus services and better traffic management measures are being planned in coordination with transport authorities to handle the growing movement of vehicles around the medical campus.
